Chapter 28: Bare Hands

Luca's POV

I had been coughing for eleven years so that men like Cesare Albano would walk toward me without looking.

He walked toward me now.

He did not see me.

He saw Gemma on the top step with the lamp, and Carla beside her, and three hundred people holding candles, and he smiled at them as if the street were his.

"Beautiful speech, little bird," he said. "Pity nobody will remember it."

"Cesare," Gemma said.

"Mrs. Amadori." He bowed an inch. "You've made a mess of my week."

Two of his men came down on either side of him.

One of them had his right hand inside his coat.

I was at the foot of the steps, still in the crowd, with an old woman's candle dripping on my sleeve.

I said, quietly, "Excuse me," and I put the candle in her hand.

Cesare reached for the lamp.

Gemma did not let go.

He took her by the wrist and pulled, and the lamp tipped, and oil ran down her sleeve.

I was up eight steps before he had finished the pull.

I did not decide to move.

My body moved the way it had on the deck of my father's boat, when a line had gone slack in a gale and a man had been about to go over the rail.

I took hold of his wrist with my left hand, and I turned it until the bones gave.

He screamed.

Gemma's arm came free.

The man with his hand in his coat drew a gun, and I let go of Cesare and went into him with my shoulder.

We went down together on the stone.

I heard it go off once, high, and a woman shrieked, and the bullet cracked something above the porch.
