Chapter 12: The Key

Claudia opened the door of the brick house on Thursday night and did not say hello.

She took my face in both her hands, with clay still in the creases of her knuckles, and looked at me for a long moment.

Her thumb moved along my jaw.

It was the same place Marcello's had touched in his office, and I knew then that I was shaking.

"You came," Claudia said.

"I'm sorry. I'm so sorry. I should have come weeks ago and said it to your face."

"Don't say sorry yet," Claudia said.

"Claudia," I said.

"You don't know what you're sorry for."

She let me go and called over my shoulder.

"Marcello, Nathan, Colin, sit down. Dinner can wait ten minutes."

I heard three chairs scrape.

"Hannah is going to help me with the gravy."

I followed her through the dining room.

The long walnut table was set with five places.

The kitchen was warm and small and smelled of onions, with a pot of gravy that did not need help.

Claudia shut the door.

She leaned against the counter and folded her arms.
