Chapter 22: Four Arms
I walked into the chair's dining room on the first Friday of May with Claudia on my left arm and Marcello on my right.
Nathan's hand rested on the small of my back.
Colin's was warm on my shoulder, big enough to cover it.
Four people held me, and I did not feel held.
I felt carried.
Sixty faculty stood at a long table with candles on it and spring peonies in a bowl.
The talk dropped a half-tone as we came through the door, and then it came back, and nobody stared for longer than a breath.
I wore the green wool dress.
I wore my underwear, which Nathan had returned to me in the car with great ceremony.
"Ms. Eberhardt," said the chair, rising from the head of the table. "How good. You'll sit by me."
She looked at the other three.
"And your guests will sit where they like."
She was sixty, small and silver-haired and dry, and she looked at the four of us with perfect courtesy.
