Holly was dressed in four minutes.

Jeans, a sweatshirt, the flat boots.

She grabbed her hard hat from the hook by the back door.

It was the one Brielle had held out to her on one finger in April. She'd kept it.

Ellis was on the stairs in a T-shirt, half awake.

"What's happening?"

"Riverbend's flooding," I said.

"I'll drive."

He didn't ask if he should come.

We went in the old Volvo the housekeeper used for groceries, because it was the closest car to the door.

The rain came down so hard the wipers couldn't keep up.

Holly sat in the passenger seat with her sketchbook open on her knees, a flashlight in her teeth, turning pages.

Nobody had sent her.

That was the whole difference.

The site was lit up.

Every floodlight on. Pickup trucks with their headlights pointed at the river.

The crew was out in yellow gear, twenty-odd people, soaked through.

The foreman came running across the mud as soon as we stopped.

"Ms. Merritt. Sorry. Mrs. Pembroke." He'd never gotten used to it. "It's the north wall. The water's coming over the cap in two places, and there's a crack at the base that wasn't there at ten."

Holly got out into the rain.

She didn't flinch.
