Chapter 7: Something Old

Holly didn't scream.

She lifted one ribbon of silk out of the box and let it fall back.

Then she sat down on the bottom stair.

"Okay," she said. "Okay. I'm done."

"Holly."

"I mean it. I'm going home." She was talking to the floor, not to me. "There's a way to quit. I'll lose everything I came for, but I'll be home, and my friend will be there, and nobody puts poison in your soup in Dayton."

The housekeeper looked at me. I looked at the dress.

I could have told her right then.

I could have said, I'm not in Dayton, I'm here, I came for you.

The air above the stairs flickered red before I even opened my mouth.

I closed it.

"The wedding's in three weeks," I said. "You can quit tomorrow. Today you're going shopping with me."

She looked up. "For what?"

"A better dress."

"Mrs. Pembroke, I'm not marrying Chase in any dress."

"Then you'll have a better dress for whatever you do instead."

She almost smiled.

The bridal salon on Oak Street had a velvet sofa, a three-way mirror and a manager who went pale when she saw who'd walked in.

"Mrs. Pembroke. We are so sorry. We don't understand how this happened. The dress was in our back room until this morning."

"We'll talk about that," I said. "First, show her everything."

They showed her everything.

Holly stood on the little round platform in a dress with a cathedral train and looked so miserable I started to laugh.

"You look like a wedding cake that's been told bad news," I said.

She laughed so hard she had to sit down on the train.

The next one had feathers.

"No," we said at the same time.

The one after that was a plain column of heavy ivory crepe, no beading, long sleeves, open back.
