Chapter 28: Spring Roster

Beck heard her.

He didn't change his face.

"That's fine," he said. "I knew what I signed."

"It's not fine," I said.

"Callie. We won. Look at them."

He meant the team.

The freshman was wearing his headphones around his neck.

The grad student was lying on the stage with the senior's jacket over his face.

"I'm looking at you," I said. "You gave up ten thousand dollars to stand here."

The director put the other four envelopes back in her folder.

"Tuesday," she said. "My office. Bring your whole team, Miss Swann. I'll rule then."

On Tuesday the six of us crammed into her office on the second floor of the union.

Seven, with Betsy, who said a club president had a right to attend.

The sophomore sat on the windowsill flexing her new wrist.

The director had the rulebook open on her desk with three sticky notes in it.

"Section 9.6," she said. "Mr. Ormsby forfeited the varsity scholarship he held. He did. That scholarship went back to the program on October thirteenth."

Beck nodded.

"Section 9.4 says the winning club team becomes the varsity roster for spring, with all five scholarships," she said. "The program has five. They're yours."

"The rule doesn't say he can't win one back. I read it four times. Neither does the coach's form."

She looked over her glasses at Beck.

"You put it down on Monday in front of a hundred people. You can pick it up on Tuesday in front of seven."

Betsy made her balloon noise again.

"One more thing," the director said. "The coach resigned Sunday morning. The roster for spring is named by the captain. That's you, Miss Swann."

Everybody looked at me.

I'd thought about it for three days.

I hadn't told anybody, not even Beck.

"Support and shotcaller, me," I said. "Carry, the freshman. Lane, the grad student."
