Chapter 6: Nine Hundred

Beck didn't argue.

He nodded once.

"Okay," he said.

"You don't want to know why?"

"I'd like to. You don't owe me why."

The whole room was pretending not to listen.

"Because if I say yes," I said, "I won't know if I said it because you're good or because you're you. And I need to know."

He thought about that.

"That's fair," he said. "The offer doesn't expire."

Then he looked at the freshman by the radiator.

"Your tryout. The eight and zero. That was real."

The freshman's ears went pink under the headphones.

Beck left.

Betsy shut the door very slowly and turned around with both eyebrows up.

"Don't," I said.

"I didn't say anything."

Nobody mentioned it again.

After everyone went home, Betsy picked my slice up off the floor.

I'd taken one bite.

She didn't say anything about it that night either.

On Wednesday she did.

It was eight o'clock, and I was at my desk with a rice cake and a black coffee, watching replays of Sutton.

Betsy came in from her anatomy lab still in her scrubs and stopped in the doorway.

"Did you eat dinner?"

"Yes."

"What?"

I held up the rice cake.

"That's a coaster, Callie."

"I'm not hungry."

"You've said that every night since we moved in."

She dropped her bag.

"I've been counting," she said. "I'm a nursing student. Counting is literally the job. You eat breakfast if I put it in front of you. You don't eat lunch. Dinner is a rice cake."

"Betsy."

"Your mom works in an ER. You know what she'd say."

I did know.

That was why I'd never told her.

I didn't have an answer, so I put my headphones back on.

Betsy went out and let the door bang.

I wasn't watching the replays anymore.

I'd opened my old messages instead.
