Chapter 20: Nashville

Gaspard Lachapelle stood on a sidewalk in South Boston at ten past three in the morning, with snow settling on his shoulders, and looked up at one lit window.

It was the third floor of a three-decker.

The curtain was open.

He had been looking at it for twenty minutes.

He had driven five hours with the radio off, practicing a speech in French, and then in English, and then in neither.

None of it had survived the bridge.

The front door of the building opened.

Nash came out onto the stoop in gray sweatpants and the white 29, with his arms wrapped around himself and no shoes.

"I saw the car," he said. "Get up here before you die."

"I am not finished with my speech."

"Then give it from the stoop. It's a good stoop."

"You will freeze."

"I'm from Boston."

"You are barefoot."

"Say the thing, Gaspard."

Gaspard put his hands in his coat pockets, then took them out again, because there was nothing in them.

"Two years ago," he said, "you gave an interview after a game in Montreal."

Nash blinked.

"I give a lot of interviews."

"A reporter asked how you play against me. You said I am a very nice piece of furniture. You said you just skate around it."

The snow hissed on the pavement.

"And you laughed," Gaspard said. "And the clip went around. In Montreal they painted it on a sign. For a year, when I came out of the tunnel, a man in section 108 held up a chair."
