Chapter 22: Sit Up Straight

Constance stood with the microphone in her hand and heard herself fill the ballroom.

The recording went on without her.

"Pres will sit still. He always does."

"And Lacey, send her Preston's video the moment she's out the door, so she has something to watch."

"Yes, Constance," said my sister's voice.

"Joanna's money is in the firm. As long as she's ashamed, she'll sign whatever I send."

The file ended.

For a moment the room had no sound at all.

Then two hundred chairs creaked as people turned to look at the podium.

Constance lifted the microphone.

"That recording," she said, "has been altered."

Her voice was as smooth as ever.

It didn't carry.

"Altered by whom?" said the woman at the board table. "Your own voice, Constance."

"It is a family matter."

"It is a fraud," said the old woman in lavender. "I gave this Foundation eleven thousand dollars a year for thirty years."

"We are not discussing this here."

"Yes," said Rafe, "we are."

He walked to the front of the ballroom, taking his time.

He stopped beside the podium, and he took the microphone out of her hand as gently as a coat from a child.

She let him.

"I'm calling the vote," he said.

"The Foundation's charter says a motion can be heard at any open meeting. This is an open meeting."

"I hold fifty-one percent of the voting shares."

"I move that Constance Aldane be removed as president, and that Preston Aldane be removed as chairman."
