Chapter 14: After Hours

"Then let him read it," I said.

Danica's father blinked.

He had expected me to come apart in his study, and I had not.

"A copy of pages I signed under a lie," I said. "I have a lawyer who bills by the hour and she'll enjoy it."

Bram's hand settled on my back, flat and steady.

We walked out past two hundred empty chairs.

The band was packing up without being asked.

Danica stood alone at the edge of the lawn with her mother's arm in hers, and she watched me go the whole way to the van.

Nobody said anything until we were out of the gate.

"I want a drink," I said.

"We have cooking sherry."

"Perfect."

At eleven that night the kitchen was dark except for the light over the range.

The crew had unloaded and gone home.

Bram set two tiny glasses of sherry on the steel counter and neither of us touched them.

I looked at my right palm.

The blister from the bread pan had healed to a pink shine.

"You said you notice me," I said. "That I hum."

"Yes."

"What else?"

He leaned back against the sink and crossed his arms.

"You count the till twice, even when it's not your till," he said. "You send your mother a picture of every plate that comes out well. You don't eat until the crew has."
