Chapter 22: Closing the Account
Hazel's POV
"One thing," Neil said again.
His suit was soaked through, and his lip was split from something that had happened in the back room.
"Toss for it," he said. "A real coin. Heads, you come to my plea hearing on Tuesday and tell the judge what you want done to me. Tails, I never ask you for anything again."
Bram's arm tightened around me.
I looked at Neil's open hands for a long moment.
"No," I said.
"Hazel."
"No coin. I'm done letting one decide anything for me." I held up the torn marker in its two halves. "I'll come on Tuesday because I want to. Not because you flipped."
His face crumpled, and for once I didn't look away from it.
"Thank you," he said.
"Don't thank me yet."
Two officers took him by the elbows, gently, toward the van.
Bram and I stood in the lot with the sun coming up red over Route 9.
"You're shaking," he said.
"I'm hungry."
"That I can fix."
He made eggs in the kitchen at six, with the range hissing and the crew coming in one by one, and they pretended not to look at us.
The second shift's dishwasher put a hot coffee at my elbow and said, "Congratulations," without explaining.
On Monday I went to Paula's office above the dry cleaner and put the plain envelope on her desk.
"What's this?"
"Your retainer. Five thousand. From me."
"I already have a receipt."
"Write another one, with my name."
She counted it twice and billed me for the second time.
