Chapter 16: The Round
The engineer with the ponytail turned his phone face down against his chest.
Nobody else did.
Forty faces swung toward the copier, and I stood there in my best cardigan with the clip glowing in their hands.
"Conference room," said the investor, and took my elbow. "Three of us. Now."
She steered me across the floor, past a row of people who suddenly found their keyboards interesting.
Dash followed a step behind and did not touch me.
The glass walls of the conference room felt very thin.
The investor sat at the head of the table and slid her phone into the middle.
"The rival fund sent my committee Bettina's deck at seven this morning," she said. "I'll read you slide six."
She read it flatly.
"Technical co-founder, Bettina Crowe. Key-person risk: a former temp with a documented public breakdown, who has misrepresented her identity to her employer."
"And on slide nine, Mr. Rhine is a founder who conceals material facts from his own team."
"Which," she added, "he proved at nine-fifteen by announcing it."
