Chapter 10: The Corridor

Harvey didn't speak until we were in the car, and then he spoke to the windshield.

"Four minutes," he said.

"What?"

"You asked me how long I stood outside your door. Four minutes."

I turned in my seat.

"Mallory told me she was going to a friend's wedding," he said. "I tracked her phone to the hotel. I found the dressing room because I could hear her."

"You heard her."

"I heard her say his name, and then I heard his voice, and I knew it. It was my cousin."

"And you knew the bride was her stepsister."

"I did."

"You knew that I was in that building."

"Yes."

"And you stood there."

He nodded once.

"I was working out what to do. If I knocked, they'd stop and lie. If I waited, there was a camera running, and the Fosdick family could never say afterward that I'd invented it. I wanted proof for the board." His hands tightened on the wheel. "Then you opened the door."

I said nothing for the length of a red light.

"You let me walk in on it," I said.

"I let it be filmed."

"Don't say it like that's better!"

"It isn't better." He pulled over, in front of a closed laundromat, and turned off the engine. "I put a case against my cousin ahead of a woman I'd never met. I'd do the same thing again, if I only had the one chance, and I would never forgive myself."

"I would have wanted a knock."

"I know."

"I would have wanted a stranger to knock on my door and say, Tilda, don't open this one."
