Chapter 17: Not Coming Back
Everyone in the room looked at me.
Ian was still smiling.
"Go on, sweetheart," he said. "Tell them about the glassblower."
I picked up the wristband and put it back in my bag.
"He's right," I said.
Ian's smile got wider.
"I'm not coming back," I said to the investors' man. "But I'll sell you my shares."
The smile stopped.
"All forty percent," I said. "Today. At whatever you think they're worth after a recall. On one condition."
The investors' man folded his hands.
"Which is?"
"The money's in my account by nine tomorrow morning."
He looked at the screen.
The two investors on it leaned together and talked with their microphones off.
Ian was doing math.
Forty percent from me and the twenty they already held made sixty.
Sixty made him a minority shareholder in the company with his name on the door.
"Alice," he said. "Wait. Think about this. Let's talk at home."
"I don't live there."
"It's your company."
"It was. You fired me from it." I picked up my notebook. "Now it's theirs. You can explain the purchase order to them."
