Chapter 10: Tied Up

By Friday night the plan for the banquet covered three whiteboards.

Se-ra ran the press.

Ji-ho ran the seating chart, down to which board members had grudges and who was sleeping with whom.

Do-yoon ran everything else.

At eleven he was still in the study, rehearsing a speech out loud to an empty room, and getting it wrong.

"Our families have a long history," he said.

He stopped.

"No."

"Our families have a long, complicated..."

"No."

"We stand here tonight as..."

Do-yoon put his head down on the oak.

The door opened.

He didn't look up.

"You're doing it again," Jae-wook said.

"Doing what?"

"Turning a speech into a contract."

"It's a speech."

"It's a wall."

Jae-wook came around the desk and lifted Do-yoon's chin with one finger.

"There will be four hundred people. Half of them hope you fall flat. You can't get through that with notes."

"Then what do I do?"

"Come upstairs."

"I have to..."

"Come upstairs, Doyoon-ah."

The bedroom was dim, with one lamp on.

Jae-wook had laid something on the white sheet.

It was a necktie of pale wine silk, folded into a long strip.

Do-yoon looked at it.

Then he looked at Jae-wook.

Jae-wook didn't say anything, and neither did Do-yoon.

The air in the room had gone thick.

"In the study," Do-yoon began, and his voice came out odd, "you told me to keep my hands where you put them."
