Chapter 8: The Grave
Do-yoon's grandfather lay under a plain grey stone on a hillside in Yongin.
Beside the stone was a rectangle of dead grass, and the chrysanthemums had gone brown.
Do-yoon stood in front of it with his hands in his coat pockets.
Jae-wook stood a step behind him.
He had insisted on driving, and he had waited in the car park until Do-yoon was out of sight, and then he had followed anyway.
"You don't have to be here," Do-yoon said, without turning.
"I know."
"He called your family thieves."
"Yours called mine worse."
"He did."
"And yours is buried across from mine," Jae-wook said.
Do-yoon turned.
"What?"
Jae-wook nodded down the slope.
Two hundred meters away, on the next terrace, a second stone stood under a second oak.
"That's my grandfather," Jae-wook said.
"They bought the plots the same year, on opposite sides of the same hill. Mine picked the spot. He said it had the best view."
Do-yoon looked at the two stones and the long bright valley between them.
"That's strange," he said.
"I know."
"It's more than strange. My grandfather talked about the feud at every Chuseok and every anniversary."
"He talked about the harbor lease for fifty years, Jae-wook. He raised me on it."
"Mine did the same."
"Then why would he buy a grave facing yours?"
"I don't know."
"Did yours ever say one kind word about us?"
Jae-wook's mouth twisted.
"He never said a word. Not good, not bad."
