Chapter 20: Shelter

For one second there was no sound at all.

Then a baby started to cry, and a thousand people started to talk at once.

Phone flashlights came up all over the main floor, little white stars bobbing in the dark.

I stood at the bottom of the grand staircase and looked out over all of them.

Then I looked out through the front glass at the street, and caught my breath.

My windows were still lit.

All twelve, gold boxes glowing in the white, the only lights on State Street.

"The backup line," Felix said beside me. "My father had them wired to the old generator after the blizzard of '67. He said the windows don't go dark."

"I didn't know that."

"Nobody's needed it since."

Outside, people caught on the sidewalk were crowding into the window doorways out of the wind, pressed against the glass, lit gold.

I climbed partway up the staircase.

Then I put two fingers in my mouth and whistled, the one I used to stop the crew when somebody was about to drill through a wire.

The whole main floor went quiet.

"Hi," I said. "I'm Dess. I do the windows."
