I Married My Fiancé's Uncle novel · Chapter 9 of 32

Chapter 9: Open Invitation

"Yes," Felix said into the phone. "I've seen it."

He listened. His face did nothing at all.

"Then they can pull out," he said, and hung up.

"Who?" I asked.

"The windows' sponsors. The bank and the candy company. Thirty years, both of them." He put the phone face down on the sheet. "Their logos aren't on a gold digger's windows, apparently."

"I'm the gold digger."

"You're the gold digger."

The phone buzzed again. BOARD.

He didn't pick up. He looked at me instead, at my hair falling everywhere, at the sheet I'd pulled up to my chin.

"Are you all right?" he asked.

"I'm naked in your bed and three million people think I married you for dirt."

"Very valuable dirt."

I threw a pillow at him. He caught it.

Then he leaned over and kissed my forehead, slow and serious, and got up to call the board back.

The comments under the video were worse than the video.

Gold digger. Clout chaser. Poor Laurence. The uncle is HOT though. She had that ring on a chain for a REASON.

I stopped reading at four hundred.

At eleven, the doorman called up from the lobby. The store was closed for Thanksgiving, but somebody had keys.

"Mrs. Priscilla Bancroft," he said, in the voice of a man reporting weather. "On her way up."

She came off the elevator in a camel coat with a pie in a bakery box.

She held it out to me.

"For the family," she said. "Since you left yours on my table."

I didn't take it.

She set it on the hall table beside the grandfather clock and walked straight into the old man's library, where she had clearly been a thousand times before I was ever born.

Felix came out of the kitchen with his reading glasses still on.

"Priscilla."

"Felix. I'm here to talk to your wife." She sat in the old man's leather chair. "Sit down, Odessa."
