Chapter 17: Sienna
I held it up so Bram could see.
His hand closed on the gate bar until the iron creaked.
"Before," he said. "She means the lodge."
"She means my mother."
Sienna was shivering on the other side of the bars in a silk slip and her fur coat, with bare feet in her driving shoes.
"Can I come in?" she said. "Please. I don't have anywhere else to be when he wakes up."
"Why should we let you in?" Bram said.
"Because when he finds his phone gone, he'll call her. And she'll know it was me."
She laughed, high and awful.
"I've been her goddaughter my whole life. I know what she does with people who know things."
"So you want protection," I said.
"Yes."
"From the camp you called a dump. From the charity cases."
She flinched.
"Yes," she said.
I looked at her for a long time through the bars.
In my first life she'd smiled on my porch while she said I was only for a year.
She wasn't smiling now.
"Here's my price," I said. "Tomorrow at noon, you go to the market. The same coffee cart."
