Chapter 23: July
"It's fine," I said. "It's only my water. Labor takes hours. Go and get Hattie."
Bram stared at the puddle on his floor.
"You're very calm," he said.
"I've done this forty times."
"You've watched it forty times."
"Close enough. Go."
He went.
He went so fast he forgot his boots and the truck keys and had to come back for both.
The one-eyed man stood in the doorway and watched him tear out of the yard.
"Pup's got a fool for a father," he said, pleased. "Good. Fools stay up nights."
Hattie came in forty minutes later with her bag and her braid flying.
She took one look at me on the stairs, still holding my basket of blankets, and pointed upstairs.
"Bed," she said. "And put those down. You're not folding laundry through this."
The birthing room was the one at the east end of the new lodge.
Bram had built it with a window over the lake, where the sun would come up.
I hadn't asked for that.
He'd just done it.
The first hours were easy.
I walked the floor with Bram and made jokes about his doorframe.
