Chapter 10: The Members

The Bayou Rose Society met on Monday at ten in the morning.

The upstairs room had a long oak table and portraits of the founders.

I had never been in that room as anyone but a baker with a tray.

Now I sat at the table in a navy dress, with Rafe on my left.

The club president sat at one end and the members along both sides.

He had not said a word since the car.

Odette was across from me in her good black hat.

Julien sat beside her in a pressed suit with a bandage taped to his forehead.

It was a small bandage.

I had seen the rug he fell on.

"We are here on a complaint," the club president said. He was a heavy old man with a gold watch chain, and he had known my grandmother. "Madam Treasurer has charged Mr. Castellane with laying hands on a member of this Society in a Society house."

"Yes," said Odette.

"Mr. Castellane?"

Rafe leaned back in his chair.

"I put Mr. Beaumont on the floor because he had his hand on my wife's wrist and she told him to let go. He didn't."

"She's not your wife," Julien said. "She's mine."
