Chapter 21: Unarmed
Through the general's spyglass on the roof, Isandor saw what nobody else on the south shore saw.
Cassien did not fight them.
He turned his head and looked straight across the water at the roof, as if he knew exactly where Isandor would be standing.
Then the white mist closed again, and there was nothing out there but water.
Isandor came down off the roof faster than he had climbed it.
"Ready the lines," said the older general at the bottom of the steps. "We cross at the narrows in an hour."
"No."
"Majesty, they have taken the consort."
"I know what they have taken."
Isandor unbuckled his sword belt and handed it to the general.
Then he drew the knife from his sleeve, and his aunt raised an eyebrow.
"Where are you going?" Ilvessa asked.
"Across."
"Alone."
"They will not let an army into that camp. They will let one man with a white flag."
"They will let one man with a white flag, and then put a crossbow bolt through his other shoulder."
"Maybe."
She looked at him for a long time.
"If you die, I will be Empress," she said. "I would be marvelous at it. Everybody would hate it."
