Chapter 13: Five Rings

"Whose hand is it?" the Don asked.

I put the photograph face down on his desk, because I could not look at it anymore.

"I don't know."

"Look again."

"I looked. It's a man in a waiter's jacket. I can't see his face."

"You can see the ring."

"Rings can be copied," I said.

It was a stupid thing to say, and he let it sit between us until I wanted to take it back.

Aurelio turned his left hand over on the blotter.

Under the rosary ring on his little finger was a second ring, square and flat and worn thin, with a lion on a wall.

"Five men have worn this crest in my lifetime," he said. "My father made five. I wear one."

"And the others?"

"One belongs to my brother in Naples, who hasn't left his chair in two years. One is on my other brother, who has been in the ground since Christmas."

He lifted a thick finger for each.

"One was buried on my eldest son's hand."

I nodded.

"And one is on the right hand of my younger son."

The fire that nobody had lit gave no sound.

My stomach dropped, and I kept my face still.

I kept my hands still in my lap and thought of his hands, and did not say it.

"Sandro was in Providence that night," I said, and my voice came out thin. "He told me. He was at a wedding."
