Chapter 12: Leverage

The office was warm, and that was the first insult.

A fire burned in a real fireplace.

Leather chairs, a silver tray, the smell of bergamot.

They had put me in a chair and taken my phone.

They hadn't tied me.

They hadn't needed to.

"Tea?" Vincent Rourke asked.

"No."

"It's Darjeeling. I had it sent from Kolkata."

"I'd like to leave."

"Of course you would."

He poured a cup anyway and set it by my elbow.

Steam curled up between us.

Two men stood at the door with their hands folded.

One of them limped a little.

I'd given him that.

"You were rude to my driver," Rourke said.

"He grabbed me off a sidewalk."

"He invited you."

"Everybody keeps saying invited."

He smiled and sat across from me, crossing his knees.

"You asked Damien about the photograph."

"That's none of yours."

"He told you about Nico?"

I said nothing.

"Of course he did. He tells it so well. Seventeen, the rain, the overlook." Rourke stirred his own tea. "Did he tell you who was at the overlook that night, an hour before?"

My stomach tightened.

"No."

"No. He doesn't know either." He tasted the tea. "Or he knows, and has built a very expensive building on top of it."

"You're enjoying this."

"Enormously."

The door opened.

I turned.

Damien stood in the frame, snow on his shoulders, no coat.

No Marcus.

No men behind him.

His hands were open at his sides.

"Search him," Rourke said.

They did.

They found nothing.

Damien let them.

His eyes never left me.

"Are you hurt?" he asked.

"No."

"Good."

He looked at Rourke.
