Chapter 18: Testimony

Celia had a chair brought to the middle of the ballroom floor.

She called it the witness seat.

My father sat in it with his hands on his knees.

The directors stood in a half circle around him.

Four hundred guests watched from behind them, and nobody left.

"Mr. Sinclair," Celia said. "Tell the board what you told me."

"Damien Kastar bought my daughter."

A sound went through the room.

"He came to me three weeks ago," Dad said. "He said, Frank, give me Ava, and I'll tear up your debt."

"That's a lie," Damien said.

"Let him finish," Celia said.

"He wrote the contract before she ever met him. He picked her out like a coat. He's been buying people his whole life."

Dad glanced at the men by the wall.

Then he found his courage and said the rest.

"And he cut Nico's brakes himself. I heard him say it. He was drunk, in my restaurant, years ago. He said he'd do it again."

Somebody gasped.

Damien's hand went iron in mine.

I let go of it.

I walked into the half circle and stood in front of my father.
