Damien said no four times.
The fifth time, I said, "He has the original. You can't buy it. I can sit across a table."
"He'll hurt you."
"He wants to talk. Men like that always do."
"Then Marcus goes in behind you."
"Marcus waits outside. With whoever he needs to call."
Damien looked at me for a long moment.
He didn't take my arm.
"Ask him for the tape," he said. "Then ask him why."
"I will."
The house was a brownstone on the Upper East Side, with candles in every window.
A man in a dark coat opened the door before I knocked.
I walked in alone.
The dining room was warm and gold.
A long table, two places set, a bottle of red breathing between them.
Rourke rose when I entered.
"Mrs. Kastar. You came."
"You asked so nicely."
"Sit. Please. I had the kitchen make something simple."
