Chapter 22: The Vote

The terrace room had a long glass table and a view of the parking structure.

Nobody would have chosen it for a coup.

The board sat down on both sides with their napkins still tucked into their collars, and the chairman took the head.

He had asked me to come as the largest shareholder, and I stood against the wall in my navy dress with the place card in my hand.

Russell sat at the foot of the table.

His assistant had slipped out of the hotel before the second course, and nobody had seen her go.

"I'll be brief," the chairman said. "We have heard a public statement that a signature was forged on a shareholder document, and the secretary has compared it and agrees."

"It's a family matter," Russell said.

"It is a company matter. You sent that notice to the secretary yourself."

"I was told it was valid."

"By whom?"

Russell said nothing.

"We have also heard a statement about the sale," the chairman said. "I wasn't told it was your plan for the spring until yesterday. I should have been told in July."

A woman at the middle of the table nodded.

"We were also not told," she said, "that the executive who benefits from the sale is your personal friend."

"Cynthia's bonus was a standard retention package."

"It was forty percent of the deal fee."

The room made a sound of distaste.

I watched Russell look from face to face, searching for the one that would take his side.
