Chapter 4: The Devil's Terms
"You have about two minutes," Cade said. "He argues with his phone for a long time before he comes back."
"Why would I believe a word you say?"
"You shouldn't." He took a card from his inside pocket and laid it on the cloth. "You should check it. My office is on the fortieth floor. Come at five."
"I'm having lunch with my boyfriend."
"Your boyfriend is about to lie to you for another hour." He stood, buttoned his jacket, and looked at me once more. "Don't tell him I spoke."
He walked out through the kitchen door instead of the front.
I put the card in my bag just before Theron came back, slightly out of breath, smiling.
"Sorry, babe. Client panic."
"I hope it's fine."
"It's fine." He kissed my knuckles. "Everything's fine."
He paid the bill with a card I did not recognize.
At five o'clock I stood in a glass elevator and rode up to the fortieth floor.
I told myself I was only going to look.
The assistant outside the corner office didn't ask my name.
She opened the door and said, "He's expecting you," in the voice of someone who has said it about people who were never glad to arrive.
The office was large and bare.
A wall of windows showed the whole city turning gold, and a single desk sat in front of it with nothing on its surface but a closed laptop.
Cade stood at the window with his back to me.
"Sit."
"I'll stand."
"Suit yourself." He turned. "Did you check?"
"I looked in his office desk drawer."
That was a lie, and it was the first one I had told on purpose, and he knew it was a lie.
