Chapter 20: Half a House

The whole lobby was waiting for my answer.

The bride. The bellhops. The tour group with their phones up.

Kelsey, with her grocery bag.

Cooper, a step behind my shoulder, not saying a word.

"You loved the trust, Mason," I said. "You told them so yourself. In front of two hundred people."

The officers turned him around.

The revolving door took him out into the sunlight, one slow quarter at a time.

Then he was in the back of a squad car on Meeting Street, and the lobby breathed again.

The bride at the front desk started clapping, and then the whole tour group joined her.

I didn't know where to look.

Cooper's hand found the small of my back, light, just for a second.

Kelsey was standing alone by the fireplace with her arms around herself.

I went over to her.

"Are you all right?"

"No." She wiped her face with her sleeve. "But I think I will be. Eventually."

"Get a lawyer of your own, Kelsey. Not one of Beverly's."

She almost smiled.

"Yeah," she said. "I'm figuring that part out."

Mason spent the weekend in the county jail.

On Monday a judge set his bond.

Beverly scraped the bondsman's fee together by pawning her diamond, the big one from her right hand.
