Chapter 9: The Lawsuit
The whole bar went quiet.
Even the ice machine behind the counter seemed to stop.
Mason didn't look at Kelsey.
He looked at me, fast, to see what I'd do.
That was the second time I knew.
Eleven weeks.
I did the math in my head.
Eleven weeks ago was the second week of March.
The cake tasting.
Nine cakes on little white plates at the cake shop on Broad Street, and an empty chair next to me.
Mason had texted that morning that his mother needed him in Savannah for two nights to look at a property.
"Savannah," I said out loud.
Kelsey's face lit up before she could stop it.
"It was so pretty," she said. "The squares with the moss..."
She heard herself and shut her mouth.
Mason closed his eyes.
"Claire," he said.
"You missed the cake tasting for Savannah."
"I missed the cake tasting for my mother's business."
"Your mother's business was in a hotel room with her."
The bartender set the glass down very quietly.
Mason opened his eyes.
Something in his face settled.
"Fine," he said. "Yes. Okay? Yes. Are you happy?"
Kelsey made a little sound.
"But it doesn't change anything," he said, and leaned across the spilled gin toward me. "The wedding still has to happen. It's business, Claire. My family's counting on it. You'll get the life you wanted. The house, the kids, the whole thing."
"Your family's counting on it," I said.
"You don't understand how much is riding on this."
