Chapter 23: The Last Entry

I woke at nine to the best silence of my life.

No chime, no percentages, no cheerful voice announcing what I'd earned by rolling over.

Thatcher was asleep on his back, with one arm flung over his head and the black notebook open on his chest.

He had taped his ninety stationery pages into the back, and I had read all of them at three in the morning, by the light of my phone, with a pen between my teeth.

I hadn't crossed out one.

I lay there looking at him in the gold light and thought about what I wanted to do about it.

Then I slid down under the sheet.

He was already half hard when I took him in my hand, warm and heavy and smelling of sleep.

I kissed the head, and he made a sound in his sleep.

I took him in my mouth, slowly, and the sound turned into my name.

"June."

"Good morning."

"What are you..."

"Reason ninety-one," I said around him, and he laughed, helplessly, and then stopped laughing.

I took him deeper and he groaned and his hand came down into my hair.

I worked him with my tongue and my fist, slow, then faster, until his hips began to lift.

"June, I'm going to..."

"Good."

He came with a low, broken groan, and I swallowed and kept my mouth on him until he shook.

He pulled me up the bed by my arms and kissed me hard.

"My turn," he said roughly.

He turned me onto my side with my back to his chest and lifted my leg over his thigh.

Then he pushed into me from behind, slowly, all the way, and I gripped the pillow.

"Affection," he said into my ear, in a dead-flat voice. "Infinite. Reason: that."

I broke up laughing against the pillow.

"Do it again."

"Affection: infinite. Reason: you're laughing."
