Chapter 16: The Whitaker Table

Eli's mother opened the door with flour on her forearms and said, "You're the one with the feet."

"Mom," Eli said.

"What? He told me. I've been waiting since Thanksgiving to meet the feet."

I held out the apple pie I had bought at the grocery store for nine dollars.

She took it, turned it over, and read the sticker on the bottom.

"This is from my old department," she said. "I trained the girl who made it. Come in, it's good."

The house was small and yellow, and every window was fogged.

A girl with Eli's sandy hair sat on the kitchen counter with her feet swinging, and she waved a fork at me.

"I'm his sister. I lost my keys again, so I'm supervising the potatoes."

"She's nineteen," Eli said. "She's been supervising since Tuesday."

"He talks about you constantly," his sister said. "It's disgusting."

"I do not."

"You said 'Bianca says' four times in the car."

Eli looked at the ceiling and said nothing, and his mother laughed so hard she had to set the pie down.

They put me in the chair next to Eli's mother, with a plate before I had even sat.

There was roast chicken, and potatoes, and green beans with almonds, and a basket of rolls still hot from her oven.

Nobody passed anything to me.

They handed the bowls to the person who was waiting, and then to the next, and when the rolls came around, his mother put two on my plate without asking.

I realized she had watched me eye the basket.

"Sorry," I said. "I'm taking too much."

"You took nothing," she said. "Eat."

I ate.

I told them the funny part of the clinic week, about the Labrador that swallowed a sock and then, with great dignity, gave it back.
