Chapter 13: Keep the Apron On
They were back in Zhenjiang by mid-morning, the three of them, on the early train.
Old Madam had given Ran breakfast in her own room and sent him off with a pear in each pocket.
Ran gave his report on the platform, standing very straight with his exercise book open.
"Minutes," he said. "I slept in Tai Nainai's room. She does not snore. I was told she did, and I would like the record corrected."
"Noted," said Mu Qing.
"She asked if Uncle Xu was kind to you. I said he was improving."
Xu, carrying the bag, coughed.
"She said that was a fair assessment. Also," said Ran, "you both look as though you slept well. I'm only observing."
Mu Qing found something to study on the departures board.
Xu did not go to the office.
He had a company, a Friday board meeting and thirty missed calls.
He handed the phone to his secretary in the car and told him to answer all of them.
At the shop Fan Yue looked at Xu's collar, and then at her boss's face, and said nothing with her whole body.
She held out a blue apron.
Xu took it, because there was nothing else to do.
Soon Xu was behind the counter in the blue apron, with his sleeves rolled.
