Chapter 14: The Plain Bowl
Old Madam sat at table four in a navy cloth coat with her cane against the wall.
Nobody in the shop had dared to ask her to move.
She had come alone.
The secretary stood outside the window with his arms folded and his back to the glass.
Xu Zhengyuan stood behind the counter in his blue apron.
He held a pair of tongs and had no idea what to do with them.
"Nainai," he said.
"Stop standing there like a waiter," said Old Madam.
Her eyes went to his open collar and rested there for a moment, and moved on without comment.
Xu's ears went dark red.
"Mu Qing. I will have the plain bowl."
Mu Qing had come in from the gate with Ran on his hip.
He put the boy down slowly.
"Our cook at the old house is eighty," said Old Madam, drily.
"He told me on Sunday that an apprentice made a bowl of noodles in his kitchen."
"It was the night of my son's funeral. Plain, with scallion oil."
She looked at Xu as she said it.
"My grandson came down for it and did not go back up until morning."
Xu made a small sound.
