Chapter 7: Run It Again
At twelve-twenty, Lanzhou was sitting on the edge of his bed with the script open to a page he had read forty times.
Yao knew because the cranes on the folding screen were backlit, and the shadow behind them had not moved in an hour.
"You're not breathing," Yao said to the silk.
"Rule three," said the shadow. "Midnight has passed. We do not discuss work."
"We aren't. I'm discussing your lungs."
The screen slid aside.
Lanzhou stood there in a plain grey T-shirt with the script held against his chest like a shield.
"Scene thirty-one," he said, quickly. "Tomorrow at ten. It's the kiss."
Yao sat up.
"The first kiss in the whole drama, with the lead actress, on a rooftop, in the snow machine. The director wants it in one take."
"You've kissed people on camera before."
"Half a dozen times. None of them counted." Lanzhou looked at the carpet. "They were blocking. Someone shouts action, and you tilt your head to the left."
"And off camera?"
The silence went on for a long time.
"Not once," said Lanzhou, very quietly. "I'm twenty-six, and I have never kissed anyone who wasn't being paid to be there. Or done anything else. Don't write it down."
Yao's mouth opened and shut.
It seemed to him that the whole famous face had come down off its poster and sat on the end of the bed.
"I'm twenty-three," Yao said, and heard his own voice go small, "and I've never kissed anyone either. Or anything else. I've been too busy being a menace."
