Chapter 12: Glass
The St. Louis County jail had a visiting room with a Plexiglas wall and a row of steel stools bolted to the floor.
I sat on the third one with Zuri on my knee in her good yellow sweater, which Mason had bought at a drugstore at seven that morning, and I looked at the door on the other side of the glass.
My hands were sweating.
The cut on my palm had scabbed over under the butterfly strips and itched.
Outside, in the lot, three trucks sat in a row with their engines off.
Dutch had told them to wait.
They had waited, in the cold, for an hour and ten minutes.
I could see Dirk through the barred window high in the wall, a tall shape beside his truck, with his arms crossed and his breath going up.
A deputy buzzed the inner door.
My brother came through it.
I did not know him for one second.
Cyrus had been a big man, heavy through the chest and shoulders, with a laugh you could hear across a parking lot.
The man who sat down on the other side of the glass was thin.
His jumpsuit hung off his collarbones.
His hair was cropped close, and there was gray at the temples that had no business being there on a man of thirty.
He picked up the phone on his side.
I picked up mine.
For a moment we just looked at each other.
Then Cyrus said, in a voice I would have known in the dark, "I wanted you to run."
I couldn't breathe.
"What?"
"I wanted you to run," my brother said.
"I've wanted it for three years.
"You should never have gone back to him at all, Zo.
"You should never have gone to the courthouse that day."
"Cyrus," I said.
"Where have you been?"
"You can see where I've been," he said.
"Why didn't you call?" I said.
