Chapter 23: Warden of the Gate

I woke in my grandmother's infirmary, in the same iron bed as the morning after Ashfall.

This time I remembered everything.

Sunlight lay across a quilt, and my side was bound in clean linen, and something warm and heavy was holding my hand.

Anders sat on a stool beside the bed with his head down on the mattress.

He had not slept.

I knew it from the grey under his eyes when he lifted his face.

"Marit," he said, and his voice cracked.

"Don't cry on the quilt," I said. "Gran will make you wash it."

"I'll wash anything."

"How long?"

"Two days." He laughed, wet and unsteady, and pressed my knuckles against his mouth. "The blade missed the lung by a finger. Your grandmother stitched you and told me to get out. I didn't."

"I'd have thrown you out," Gran said from the door.

She came in with a bowl and a spoon and sat on the end of the bed.

"He sat on that stool for forty-eight hours," she said. "He ate what I put in his hand and said nothing. I'd call it the first sensible thing he's done."

"Gran."

"I'm only saying."

She gave me broth.

Anders watched every spoonful.

By noon I could sit up.

By evening I could walk, slowly, with his arm around me, to the door of the cottage.

The pack was waiting in the yard.

I had not expected that.

There were more than a hundred of them standing in the lane in the cold, in their good coats, with their hats in their hands.
