Chapter 30: Choices
"I need to think," I told the Program's director.
"I'd worry if you didn't." She handed me a card. "Christchurch, the first of December, if it's yes. Bring your terms. I can tell you have some."
She went off through the chaos.
Boone looked down at me.
"You have terms," he said.
"I have so many terms."

Sunday breakfast was at Gwen's, because Gwen owned a table.
The cat was on it.
Gwen made pancakes shaped like Antarctica that came out shaped like Ohio.
"It's a sign," she said. "Ohio follows you everywhere."
Boone ate four of them standing at the counter, because the cat had his chair.
I sat with the director's card in front of me and didn't eat anything.
"Okay," Gwen said, pointing her spatula. "Talk. Both of you. I'll referee."
I looked at Boone.
"Half the year in Christchurch," I said. "Half at whatever station needs me. I'd be the one opening every crate. I'd sign every kit myself."
"Yeah," he said.
"It's not a job where I'm home at six."
"Doc. I fix dozers at the bottom of the planet. Nobody in this kitchen is home at six."
Gwen snorted into her coffee.
"I mean it," I said. "I spent five years building my life around a man's schedule. Around his announcements. His day the Group is mine." I made myself say it. "I'm not doing it again. Not even for you."
He put his plate down.
"Good," he said.
"Good?"
"I don't want you to." He leaned on the counter across from me. "I told you on the ice. I'll go where you go. That doesn't mean you go where I want. It means I figure out how to be useful wherever you land."
"And if I land at Pole for a winter?"
"Then I know a guy who can fix the dozers."
