Chapter 13: Again
Mikel had never in his life asked for anything, and the word stuck in his throat.
"Again," he said, a second time.
Fionn stared at him across the kitchen, bare to the waist, with the lamplight on his freckled shoulders and his mouth half open.
"You're out of your mind."
"Probably," Mikel said.
"You were on the floor. You couldn't stop it. That's not something you ask for."
"I know what it was."
Mikel's heart was slamming so hard that he could feel it in his teeth.
The shame had come first, hot and total.
For one blind second on the stone floor, with his legs gone, he had wanted to tear the room apart.
Then the shame had gone, and what lay under it had been so clean and so quiet that it frightened him.
For the first time in thirteen years his head was still.
No ranch, no pack, no uncle.
Nothing to hold up.
Only a voice, and his body answering it, and a calm.
"I need to understand it," Mikel said. "Not here."
Fionn held his eyes a long while.
"Your room," he said at last, roughly. "My mother's down the hall."
In the dark of his bedroom Mikel stood by the bed and did not know what to do with his hands.
