Chapter 14: Switch
Fionn had lit the stove in the sheep wagon, and the lamp, and had cleaned the bunk twice.
Then he sat on the step with his heart pounding and waited for the sound of a truck.
It came at dusk.
Mikel parked in the sage, got out, and walked up to the wagon with his hands empty.
He had brought nothing, as the note said.
"You came," Fionn said.
"You asked."
"I didn't ask. I wrote."
"That's asking, from you." The corner of Mikel's mouth moved. "What do you want, Fionn?"
Fionn stood.
He was twenty-one years old, and he had never in his life taken what he wanted from a man like this.
His mouth was dry.
"I want to know what you feel like," he said. "Inside."
Mikel's eyes went dark.
"Say that again."
"I want to fuck you."
The silence stretched between them.
Then Mikel climbed the two steps, ducked under the door, and began to unbutton his shirt.
"All right," he said.
"All right?"
"Nobody's ever," Mikel said. His voice was very quiet. "I want it to be you."
In the lamplight his chest was broad and scarred and rising fast, and his hands on the buttons shook.
Fionn crossed the wagon in one step and put his palm flat over Mikel's heart.
