The accordion player in the Jordan Valley dance hall played the jota too fast on purpose.
Fionn spun with his mother's hand in his and laughed out loud, because he could not help it.
The hall was packed to the rafters.
Every Basque family in three counties had come, and every wolf in the Urrutia pack, and the floor shook with the stamp of boots.
"You're good at this," Siobhan said, breathless.
"You taught me."
"I taught you in the kitchen. Look at you."
It was the last Saturday in May, and Fionn had been bonded to Mikel for six weeks.
He had not answered the note.
Neither had Mikel.
In those six weeks Mikel had fucked him in the tack room and twice in the truck.
Once it was against the shearing-shed wall in broad daylight, with a ewe watching.
Neither of them had said a word about why.
Fionn had stopped asking.
He danced.
Across the hall, at the long table by the bar, Mikel sat among the elders with a glass of red wine and watched him.
He had been watching all night.
Gorka sat three seats down, with his own glass and his own eyes on the same place.
