Chapter 9: Why
Mikel drove the first four miles without a word.
The dance hall's lights faded in the mirror, and the dark closed in on both sides of the road.
Fionn sat against the passenger door with his arms crossed.
On his knee lay the white envelope.
He had taken it out of his shirt in the lot, and now he smoothed it flat with his thumb, over and over.
"Say it," he said finally.
"Say what?"
"What you did."
Mikel's hands tightened on the wheel.
"I kept your letter."
"Two springs," Fionn said.
"Yes."
"I was eighteen and nineteen," Fionn said.
His voice was very flat.
"I scrubbed the dog runs for you. I fed your dogs in the snow."
He smoothed the envelope again.
"I waited for that letter every day of the second month. When it didn't come, I thought they'd changed their minds."
"Fionn," Mikel said.
"I thought I wasn't good enough. For a school. Do you know what that's like?"
Mikel pulled the truck off the road.
It rolled to a stop on a gravel turnout above the valley, with the sage silver below and the moon high over the ridge.
He cut the engine.
In the silence Fionn could hear him breathing.
