Chapter 24: Two Weeks

Thursday at sundown, the eldest elder came back up the ridge.

She climbed the half mile on her cane, rested twice, and wouldn't take anybody's arm.

Then she climbed the lookout stairs, past the black scorch at the bottom, and sat down on Gran's lightning stool.

The cook brought her coffee in the chipped blue mug.

I stood in the door of the cab and looked at her.

The light was gold. The wind was light from the west.

It was my photo from Monday, every detail of it.

"Stop staring, girl," she said. "Take my picture if you like. I won't be anywhere interesting."

"I already did. On Monday."

"Then you knew I'd come."

"I knew you'd sit there."

She sipped her coffee.

"Your gran stood me on this stool in a lightning storm when I was younger than your mother," she said. "Told me I'd be an elder one day. I laughed at her."

"Was she right?"

"She was always right. It made her very hard to have lunch with."

She told me the rest while the sun went down.

The two men and Iris were in the cell under the hall.

The county had filed arson charges on all three, from the investigator's notebook and his photos.

Damien was still Alpha.

"Only the full council can take a ring off an Alpha," she said. "So he wears it two more weeks."

"And then?"
