Chapter 26: The Verdict

The flash went white across the burned cedars.

The photo slid out into my hand.

Nobody in that grove made a sound while it cleared.

Eleven packs, waiting on a square of gray paper.

Damien stood with his hands in his pockets, smiling.

The gray went darker, and I held it up so the moonlight fell on it.

Monday night.

A small gray room with a concrete floor and a drain in the middle.

A steel door with no handle on the inside.

Damien Stroud sat on a bare cot in a white undershirt.

His wrists were bound in front of him with silver wire, and the skin under it was red and blistered.

His right hand lay open on his knee.

There was no ring on it.

Only a pale stripe on his finger where a ring had been.

I walked it down the row of Alphas and let each one look.

Most of them had known Gran.

One of them, a gray old Alpha from up past Helena, touched the edge of it with one finger.

"I've seen her pictures before," he said. "She took one of my boy. He's alive because of it."

When it got to the Northern Alpha, he looked at it for a long time.

Then he looked at Damien.

"A trick," Damien said. "She'll have a hundred of them."

"She'll have one more," said a voice behind me.

My mother was standing up.

My father reached for her arm.

She took it away from him, gently, and walked out into the ring.
