Chapter 14: Sworn
The legal clinic was one room in the basement of Hartwell Hall, with a space heater and a poster about tenant rights.
Beth walked Clara in on Monday morning carrying a tote bag of snacks.
Miles came in behind them and stood by the door again, until the lawyer pointed at a chair.
She was a thin woman in her fifties with reading glasses on a cord and a mug that said WORLD'S OKAYEST ATTORNEY.
She read the lawsuit. She read the credit card form. She put the two side by side and said nothing for a while.
"Who is this phone number?" she asked.
"My father."
"And the signatures?"
"They look like mine," Clara said. "He's been practicing since I was fifteen."
The lawyer wrote that down in a way that did not look like pity.
"Here is how this goes," she said. "A forged loan is not your debt. But the lender will treat it as yours until a court is told otherwise, and the court only hears what's sworn."
"Sworn how?"
"A statement, under oath, saying you did not sign and who you believe did. I file it with your answer. Then they have to prove the signature. They can't."
"Who I believe did," Clara said.
"Yes."
"The dean said that too."
"The dean is right."
Clara looked at her hands.
In the dean's office she had been able to write "whoever did it." It had bought her three days. It would not work on a sworn page with her answer attached.
Beth opened her mouth, and Miles, without turning his head, touched the tote bag with one finger.
