Chapter 4: Twenty Feet

Miles put his books down on the hood of a parked car.

He set them down carefully.

Then he walked across the lot, not fast, and stopped beside Clara's father.

"Excuse me," Miles said. "Is there a problem here?"

Frank looked him over, and the salesman's smile came back.

"Nope. Family business, son."

"It doesn't look like family business. It looks like you're holding her wrist."

Frank laughed. "Mind your own."

"Let go of her."

Miles did not raise his voice.

He stood with his hands loose at his sides, and he was taller than Frank by a head.

"I'm going to count to three," he said. "And then I'm going to walk over to the security booth, which is about forty steps from here, and ask the officer to come over and meet you."

"You're a funny kid."

"One."

Frank's hand tightened.

"Two."

Clara felt the grip loosen all at once.

Frank stepped back and straightened his jacket.

"Friday," he said to Clara, pleasantly. "I'll call." He nodded to Miles. "Nice meeting you, hero."

He walked off between the parked cars with his hands in his pockets, whistling.

Clara watched him go and rubbed her wrist.

Her fingers were tingling back to life.
