Chapter 20: The Father

The hallway went quiet around us.

Families with balloons. A Saints trainer with a bucket. Two Bayhill freshmen in suits by the door.

Chase stood up off his folding chair.

"Dad. Don't."

His father didn't look at him.

He kept his eyes on Luc.

Luc looked at me first.

I nodded.

"February fifteenth, three years ago," Luc said. "After practice. Your son found a Valentine card in his bag."

He said it plainly. Short.

Chase's father closed his eyes for a second.

"I hit him," Luc said. "He told the coach I jumped him. He said she was nobody."

He put his hand on my back.

"This is her."

Chase's father opened his eyes and looked at me.

Really looked, for the first time, the way he hadn't in the concourse in November, when his son had me by the arm.

"Is that true?" he said.

He was asking me.

"Every word," I said. "There's a video. Your son's on the floor saying it."

Chase came off the wall.

"Okay, you know what? She's been after me for three years, Dad. Three years. She tutored me so she could be near me. She got with him to get back at me. She set up this entire thing."

"I asked you about the locker room."

"It was a card! It was a stupid card from a girl who followed me around! It was a joke!"

"You told me it was a puck."

Chase stopped.

"You stood in my kitchen with your face taped up," his father said, "and you told your mother it was a puck. And then you told your coach it was him."

"Dad."

"I sat in that rink every home game for four years and watched you."

"Dad, it was freshman year. Everybody does stupid stuff."

"Not everybody gets somebody thrown out of school for it."

Chase looked around the hallway.

At the Saints families. At the two Bayhill freshmen. At Brynn, who had her phone in her pocket and her arms folded.

Nobody was on his side.

"She did this," he said, pointing at me. His voice cracked. "This is all her."

His father looked at the finger pointed at me.

Then he looked at his son.

"No," he said. "You did."
