Chapter 5: Top Drawer

I read Brynn's message until the screen went dark.

Then I woke it up and read it again.

He kept your Valentine card.

I was eighteen that February.

I'd made it on the floor of my dorm room with red cardstock and a black pen.

I'd drawn a skate on the front because I couldn't draw anything else.

I'd waited outside the Bayhill locker room with my heart in my mouth.

When nobody was looking, I slid it into the side pocket of his gear bag.

Then I waited.

He never said a word.

Not that week. Not that year. Not in two years of Sundays at the library.

I'd told myself he never found it.

Or he found it and he was too kind to embarrass me.

And it had been in his desk the whole time.

At seven Kat came in from her shift and found me sitting on the kitchen floor.

"Who died?"

I held up the phone.

She read it, sat down on the floor next to me in her scrubs, and said a word her mother would have slapped her for.

"Finola. He's had it three years and he never said anything?"

"Maybe he didn't know what to say."

"Don't do that."

"Maybe he kept it because it meant something."

"Finola Keogh. Don't you dare."

But I already was. I could feel it. Three years of hoping came back.

Luc picked me up at noon. He'd said he'd drive me to the rink so I could run my program.

I got in the truck and the heat was still broken.

Rule one.

"Brynn Coakley messaged me last night," I said. "Chase kept my Valentine card. From freshman year. I put it in his bag and he never said anything. He kept it."
