Chapter 9: Eligibility

I texted him from the stairs before his truck was even out of the street.

"What does that mean?"

The dots came up. Went away. Came up.

"It means don't believe anything he says about that card."

"Then tell me the truth."

"After the season. I promise."

I threw my phone on the bed and lay down next to it in Kat's dress.

I was furious with both of them.

Chase for lying. Luc for knowing something and sitting on it.

Kat came home at three and found me still awake.

"Well?" she said. "Did Prentiss throw up?"

"He kissed me."

She dropped her keys.

"And?"

"Nothing. Kat, there was nothing. Three years and it was like kissing a picture of him."

Kat sat down on the end of my bed and put her hand on my ankle.

"Finola," she said gently. "That's the best news I've had all year."

Monday I went to the library to study for my own finals.

Fourth floor. Not our table by the window. A carrel in the back where nobody could find me.

Chase found me in twenty minutes.

He had three of his teammates with him, big guys in Bayhill hoodies.

They spread out around the carrel.

Chase sat on the edge of my desk.

He was smiling again. Saturday night had never happened.

"Hey. I need a favor."

"No."

"You haven't heard it."

"It's always a favor."

He laughed and looked at his teammates.

"My stats paper's due Friday. If I fail stats, I'm ineligible for the spring. No Frozen Four. No Hobey. My contract gets weird." He leaned closer. "Write it for me. You could do it in a night."

"I don't do your homework. I've never done your homework."

"This is different. This is the season."

"It's your season."

"Come on, Finola." He dropped his voice. "Valentine's Day. I'll take you to my dad's steakhouse in the Back Bay. The private room. Just us. You want that, right? You've always wanted that."
