Chapter 15: My Half

I closed the bakery at two and walked the three blocks with Sinead on one side and Cal on the other.

Cal had slept four hours on my couch upstairs. He still had a crease from the cushion on his cheek.

The locksmith's van was gone.

My white door had a new brass deadbolt above the old knob, so shiny it looked fake.

The old man two doors down was already in his lawn chair. He raised his iced tea to Cal.

"She's home," he called. "He left at noon in a suit. Job interview, I'd bet. He had the face."

"Thanks," Cal said.

"Anytime. Best thing on this street since the water main."

I went up my own steps and tried my key anyway.

It didn't even go in.

I knocked.

Nothing happened for a while. Then the curtain in the front window moved.

It wasn't my curtain. Mine had been linen, cream, from the flea market on Frankford. This one was grey velvet.

"Kelsey," I said through the door. "Open it."
